Subtraction Problem

How would you work the following problem?

What is 57-14?

In the olden days I would teach...line it up and subtract each column

  57
- 14
-----
  43

Today I had a 2nd grader over who needed help with her math homework.

The answer was......

57 - 14
change 14 to 10 and 4

57  - 10 = 47

47 - 4 = 43

57 - 14 = 43

Personally, I prefer the old way.

  1. well it makes doing it in your head a little easier with the new method at least.

    1. True if they were having the kids learn their addition and subtraction facts. They don't bother with that step any more.

  2. I know when I taught, I introduced it that way. Then as they got good at it and understood what was happening (with regrouping) I taught them the standard algorithm. Hopefully they'll do that, too.

  3. I notice for 'mental math' daughter uses the breakdown method. She only uses the traditional method if she's doing written work.
