I LOVE the Montessori philosophy. I do think that Montessori is not a good fit for everyone. The students in my class that do the best are self motivated and don't need constant direction. If Benjamin wants to learn, and can self direct at home, like choosing play activities on his own, then he will do well. I have some students who follow me around all day asking me what they should do next. They know what they should be doing, they just don't want to do it. It's really not a great fit for them, and I feel that they would do better in a traditional setting where they are told what to do all day. However, if he is advanced and enjoys learning, it can be wonderful. I was working on multiplication with some first graders today, which normally isn't introduced until the end of second grade or beginning of third. I have readers at levels from not knowing letters to above fifth grade level, but no one is held back by anyone else. I would suggest going in for a tour and seeing what you think. Ask if the teachers are Montessori certified, and state certified.
